Biography

John McIntyre and his wife Mary Ellen (Nee Faulkner) migrated to Australia during Bishop Quinn's drive to introduce more Roman Catholics to the colony of Moreton Bay.

The Daily News, Tuesday, November 13, 1855 reported: The Government Emigration Commission have just charted the Phoebe Dunbar to take out emigrants to Moreton Bay from Plymouth on 7th January next.

John and Mary Ellen departed Plymouth onboard the Phoebe Dunbar on 7 January, 1856. Their daughter Mary Ann was born during the voyage to Australia. The Phoebe Dunbar arrived in Moreton Bay on 5 May, 1856 after running ashore east of Amity Point. Shipping records indicated they could both read and John's calling was Labourer.

The Moreton Bay Courier, Saturday May 10, 1856 reported: We deeply regret the necessity of recording another disaster - happily unattended with loss of life, but still serious enough - arising in great measure from the continued absence of a light house, or other distinguishing mark for the northern entrance into Moreton Bay. We are not in possession of an authenticated account of the accident, and can only at present give the report that has reached us. The ship Phoebe Dunbar, from Plymouth, with about 270 immigrants, all well, arrived off the bay on Monday last, and, the weather being hazy, the Captain appears to have mistook the entrance, and stood in between Moreton and Stradbroke Islands. The ship soon got ashore to the eastward of Amity Point, and here she seems to have sustained considerable damage, as she was found to leak very much when got off. The mail of the ship arrived in Brisbane on Thursday, and the Agents, Messrs J. & G. Harris, have dispatched the steamers Broadalbane and Sampson to the south entrance, to afford all possible assistance. It is reported that one of the seamen was drowned, and that another had his arm broken, by the upsetting of a boat when attempting to get the ship off the bank. We have since learned that the ship, after being got off the bank, was brought through the South Passage, and anchored between Amity Point and Dunwich. She was making a great deal of water, and the pumps were kept constantly at work. She had lost her rudder and two anchors. In all probability the immigrants will be brought to Brisbane by the steamers to-day.

After months at sea and the birth of the first child onboard the ship their arrival at Moreton Bay was tainted by the death of Mary Ann some fourteen days after their arrival.

They settled at One Mile Swamp (now known as Woolloongabba) where they had another thirteen children, three of whom did not survive infancy.

John and Mary Ellen are both buried at the Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane.
