Biography
Robert Carse Bishop arrived in Moreton Bay on 27th July, 1865 after having worked his way out as a butcher on the Ship Naval Reserve which had set sail from The Tail of the Bank, Glasgow, Scotland, on 22nd April, 1865.
He settled on the Darling Downs, Queensland and his obituary which appeared in the Clifton Courier on Tuesday, September 5, 1829 gives an interesting account of his life in Australia.
Another link with the past was severed by the death on Saturday night last of Mr Robert Carse Bishop of Kings Creek. Mr Bishop had been ailing for some time and he passed away quietly in the presence of his wife and family at the age of 77 years. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1845, Mr Bishop came to Queensland by the sailing ship Naval Reserve, and spent his 20th birthday on board on the way out. After a short stay in Brisbane he came on to the the Downs and worked at his trade with the late Mr Robert Cook who had a butchering business in Allora. Mr Bishop next went to Rockhampton, travelling the whole distance by road, which in the early days was no mean accomplishment, but he returned to the Downs some time afterwards and engaged in farming on a rented property at Spring Creek. Forty-three years ago Mr Bishop took up land at King's Creek and has made it his home ever since, conducting for many years a butchering business in conjunction with his farm. On two occasions Mr Bishop took a trip home to Scotland and visited his relatives in Glasgow. The family numbered fourteen children, seven of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, also five sons, George (Nobby), William, James, Donald and Thomas (King's Creek) and two daughters Mrs Osborne (Aramac) and Mrs John Gillam Junior (King's Creek). For many years Mr Bishop took an active interest in all local matters and was a member of the King's Creek State School Committee for over thirty years. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr H. W. Stay of Allora and the horsemen that followed the remains to their last resting place bore eloquent testimony to the high regard and esteem in which he was held. The Rev. R. L. Reid conducted the service at the Clifton cemetery and wreaths were sent by the following: Mother and family, Mrs John Gillam Senior and family, Mr and Mrs John Gillam Junior, George Bishop and family, Mrs R. Bishop Junior and Mrs D. H. Rickert.
